A new report presents an overview of the upcoming iPhone 15 using Titanium edges, new display technology and more

The iPhone 15 pro models will get a new design, replacing the shiny and fingerprint-prone stainless-steel edges with something stronger, lighter and more premium: titanium. Apple has long sought to bring titanium to the iPhone and using the metal with recent watches was a test for bringing that material to its highest-volume device.

Before any rumors on the subject became public, Patently Apple first covered Apple's patents pointing to the future use of Titanium in various Apple devices as our cover graphic from one of the patents presents. The patents began to be filed in 2020. You could review our patent reports here: 01 and 02.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman makes a few pointers this morning on the upcoming iPhone 15 launching in September, as follows:

Earlier this week, MacRumors report on the iPhone 15 possibly gaining an "Action Button." The new physical button on the next-generation Pro iPhone models that replaces the Ring/Silent switch. The Action button would allow users to quickly access various functions and settings without necessarily unlocking the device or navigating to an app. You could learn more about that here.

Gurman also noted that Apple Inc. designers have long dreamed of an iPhone that is truly all-screen — with no borders around the display and no cutouts for cameras or sensors. Last Monday, Patently Apple posted a supply chain report titled "Apple has challenged Samsung and LG Display to create a Bezel-less OLED Display that supports Cameras under the Display." Patently Apple was also first to report on Apple's patents regarding cameras for Touch ID under the display back in 2016 before any rumors surfaced on the matter. Other patent reports covering Touch ID and Face ID cameras under the display can be reviewed here: 01, 02, 03, 04 and 05.

Gurman later noted that for this year, two of the biggest changes to the iPhone 15 line will be that the standard iPhone 15 models will trade in the notch for the Dynamic Island, while the Pro and Pro Max displays will be made with a new technology: low-injection pressure over-molding, or “LIPO.”

That new process will shrink the border size around the display to 1.5 millimeters (from about 2.2 millimeters on current iPhones). LIPO was first used in the Apple Watch Series 7 to make that device’s borders thinner and increase the size of the display. Sources tell Gurman that Apple plans to eventually bring the feature to the iPad as well. For more tidbits, review the full Bloomberg report.
